Product for maintaining and/or re-balancing the vaginal microflora

Description

The project aims to develop an optimised composition to maintain and/or re-balance the vaginal microflora, to characterise the product, to specify the technological conditions necessary to scale up the manufacturing process and to protect intellectual property rights. The project proposes a new composition including volatile oils, new generation polyphenolic prebiotics and postbiotic compounds to protect and stimulate local populations of vaginal lactobacilli. It has been shown that lactobacilli are protected against various types of stress by new generation prebiotics (e.g. polyphenols) and that they are stimulated in development by post-biotic compounds, which result from the fermentation of prebiotic fibres. Such a composition has never been realised before. The innovative approach concerns the novelty of the composition and the form of conditioning. The formulation is an adhesive gel, which responds to temperature variations (consistent gel at room temperature and fluid gel at body temperature) and has the following advantages: reduced loss of volatile oils during storage at room temperature, ease of application of the consistent gel, better mucoadhesivity and viscosity after application. The research and innovation service to be provided includes the following activities: selection of the ingredients of a gel composition designed to maintain and/or re-balance the vaginal microflora; optimisation of the composition by laboratory tests on lactobacilli strains and epithelial cell cultures; characterisation of the optimised composition, incorporated in a vaginal applicator; study for the introduction into manufacturing of the product, assistance with intellectual property rights. The technological risk of obtaining the product and the commercial risk are low. The service provider (INCDSB) has the appropriate and necessary expertise and infrastructure for product development.
