The basic idea of this project involves the development of a complex, integrated monitoring and bioremediation system for heavy metals and radionuclides in contaminated sites. The realisation of this integrated system is conditioned by the successful use of the versatile characteristics of micro-organisms that can function both as bio-catalysts in the transformation/degradation of the two classes of contaminants, radionuclides and heavy metals, respectively, and as molecular bio-recognition elements, since the project proposes as a monitoring tool a network of modified micro-electrodes/micro-sensors (enzymatic and microbial), selective and sensitive for the detection of heavy metals and radionuclides.
