Participation of APECS Romania members in the First APECS (ASSOCIATION OF POLAR EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS) World Summit held in Sofia, Bulgaria on 6-8 June 2015

Since its success during the International Polar Year ( IPY ), APECS has grown significantly. Today, APECS members include approximately 5000 early-career scientists, mentors and educators with interests in the polar regions from over 80 countries. APECS has also evolved institutionally with 26 National Committees (NCS ) on all continents except Antarctica.

The 2015 APECS World Summit "The Future of Polar Research" was an initiative to bring APECS and NCs representatives together to discuss the future of polar research in science communication and new challenges that the organization wants to address in the near future. The summit integrated workshops grouped under three main themes :

  • data sharing and transparency of science
  • communication in science and education - initiatives
  • APECS network and future directions

APECS Workshop 2015

A large part of the World Summit hosted a training workshop for polar data sharing and open science. The main objective of this workshop was to educate users on open access, data sharing and transparency in science. Specifically, the intentions of the workshop were to provide guidance to early-career researchers by raising awareness of open access and data management requirements, as well as understanding data standardization by providing the tools needed to make their own data visible. To this end, the focus has been on how to use metadata and share data within online platforms such as Arctic Data Explorer, Polar Data Catalogue, Antarctic Master Directory and Antarctic Biodiversity Portal.

  • The National Committees present at the APECS World Summit were: APECS Brazil, APECS Bulgaria, APECS Canada, APECS Finland, APECS France, Indian Polar Research Network, APECS Italy, APECS Japan, APECS Oceania, APECS Poland, APECS Portugal, APECS Romania, Russian Polar Initiative / APECS Russia, APECS Switzerland, UK Polar Network, APECS United States.
