The participation of Romanian Delegation to the XXXVIII Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and the XVIII Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection
From 01-10 June 2015, the XXXVIII Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and the XVIII Meeting of the Committee on Environmental Protection took place in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The agenda of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting included: multi-year strategic work plan, Antarctic operations and safety, tourism and non-governmental activities in the Antarctic Treaty area, scientific issues, scientific cooperation and facilities, implications of climate change on Antarctic area management, biological prospecting in the Antarctic.
The agenda of the Antarctic Environmental Protection Committee meeting included the following: strategic discussions based on the future CEP work plan, remediation of environmental damage, climate change implications for the environment: strategic approach, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection and protected area management, conservation of Antarctic flora and fauna.
Romania was represented by a delegation led by Prof. Dr. Eng. Tudor Prisăcaru Secretary of State - President of ANCSI* and which included: Dr. Manuela Sidoroff - Director General of INCDSB** and Vice-President of CNCA*** of the Romanian Academy and Dr. Mihaela Cotta - Associate Researcher of CNCA.
During the meetings, the Romanian delegation presented several reports on Romanian research in Antarctica for the period 2014-2015.
Members of the Romanian delegation met with representatives of the partners from the Republic of Korea and staff members of the Korea Institute for Polar Research. The purpose of the meeting was to review the implementation of the Framework Agreement concluded between the Korean Institute for Polar Research (KOPRI) and the National Research and Development Institute for Biological Sciences (INCDSB) for a period of 5 (five) years. A review of the conduct of the ROICE 2015 scientific expedition was also conducted. On this basis the terms and conditions for the organisation of the ROICE 2016 expedition were established.

At the same time, the Romanian delegation met with the Australian delegation in order to identify the possibilities of concluding a cooperation document between the Romanian and Australian authorities for the use of the Law-Racovita-Negoita Antarctic base. Discussions were held with representatives of all parties (Australia, China, India and the Russian Federation) in the Management Group of the ASMA 6 Special Management Area, Larsemann Hills, where the Law-Racoviță-Negoiță base is located, to reactivate Romania's position in this group, including for cooperative scientific expeditions.
